Below we have tried to describe the sizes of the most common fittings so that you can pick the correct fitting size when ordering.
A male fitting has the thread on the outside and therefore, the female has the thread on the inside.
When I am describeing the fitting size I am, in the case of the pictures below, talking about the
righthand side of the coulings shown.
All the couplings come in combinations so that you could for example have a 1/2 bsp male x 3/8 bsp
male adpator.

This fitting is a 1/4bsp male x male adator.
The dimensions across the outside diameter of the thread ( Across the open end.)
are approx 12mm.

This fitting is a 3/8bsp male x male adator.
The dimensions across the outside diameter of the thread ( Across the open end.)
are approx 16mm.

This fitting is a 1/2bsp male x male adator.
The dimensions across the outside diameter of the thread ( Across the open end.)
are approx 21mm.

This fitting is the most common sized water hose inlet coupling and is a 3/4 bsp Female thread.
The dimensions across the inside diameter of the thread ( Across the open end.)
are approx 26mm.

This one of the high pressure coulpings generally used for either joining 2 hoses quickly or joining your high pressure hose to the machine.
There are 2 common types one shown here with its opposing fitting below and the other type shown just below this pair.
These have a 1/2 bsp thread and are approx 21mm across.
The o-ring on this pair of couplings is inside the male thread on the fitting below.
